  • SCOTT UPP – LAPORTE, IN (Active)

    Coach Upp has been the Slicer skipper for 21.5 seasons. He served 6.5 years as an assistant coach before taking the head coach role halfway through the 1998 season. Scott has 472 wins and 197 losses (70.5%) during that time. This includes 5 Duneland Athletic Conference titles, 8 sectional championships, 3 regional crowns, 2 Final Fours, and 1 state championship.

    He is a 6-time IHSBCA District Coach of the Year, the State Coach of the Year, and the District 4 National Coach of the Year. He has been president of the IHSBCA and served on the IHSBCA Board of Directors; numerous IHSBCA committees; and is a member of the IHSBCA, ABCA, and BCA. Scott coached the 1997 North All-Star Team, has had numerous players play college baseball, including 4 players joining the professional ranks.

    Scott is a graduate of LaPorte HS and played for the legendary Ken Schreiber. He played collegiately at Missouri State and received his Bachelors Degree from there also. He has a Masters in Administration from Indiana University and is in his 28th year in education and currently serves as the Associate Principal at LaPorte HS.

    Coach Upp and his wife has three boys: Kevin who played college baseball at Valparaiso; Kyle who played at Purdue University; and Travis who is currently playing baseball at Purdue – Fort Wayne.



    TONY UGGEN – NORTHFIELD / BLACKFORD (Active)

    Tony is a graduate of Blackford HS and Taylor University. He coached 20 years at Northfield, building a strong program, then returned to his alma mater to turn around a once powerful program that had struggled to 8 straight losing seasons. The ’17 Bruins (17-13) recorded the program’s first winning season since ’05 and won the school’s only sectional title in any sport since ’09. The ’19 Bruins finished 19-11 as the resurgence continues.

    After 26 years at the helm, Coach Uggen’s teams have won 476 games. His Norsemen garnered 13 conference titles, 7 sectional titles, 4 regionals, 2 semi-states, and 2A state titles in ‘01 and ‘12. They were state runners-up in ‘13. Overall, he has coached 6 North All-Stars, 15 All-State players, and 20 have gone on to play at the next level.

    Tony was twice named IHSBCA 2A Coach of the Year, was head coach of the ‘06 North All-Stars, and named District Coach of the Year 7 times. He has also served on several IHSBCA committees

    He and his wife Lisa have 5 children: Stephanie, Christian, Brandon, Brendan, and Elly. After teaching for 11 years, he has served the past 16 as athletic director.




    DEAN LEHRMAN – WOODLAN / HERITAGE (Active)

    Dean graduated from Heritage HS where he was a four-year letter winner in baseball and then received his Bachelor’s Degree from IPFW and also pitched for the Dons for all four years.

    Coach Lehrman has coached high school baseball for 42 years, 9 years at Woodlan and 33 years at Heritage. During that time his teams have won 602 games including 12 Allen County Athletic Conference championships. He is an 8-time ACAC Coach of the Year and has also garnered IHSBCA District Coach of the Year honors and has twice been a member of the North All-Star coaching staff.

    Dean’s teams won 8 sectional titles, 3 regional championships, 1 semi-state crown, 3 Final Four appearances, and were state runner- up in 2007. He has also coached football for 39 years, including 6 seasons as head coach (40W-26L).

    Coach Lehrman and his wife Janice have three children: Camryn, Derek, and Ryne plus three grandchildren. He currently teaches Math at Heritage High School.




    LEA SELVEY – JAY COUNTY (Active)

    Lea is a graduate of Redkey High School and the University of Evansville. He also completed his Master’s degree at Ball State University. Coach Selvey’s entire career has been at Jay County High School. He spent five years as the assistant coach and 31 years as the head coach. Coach Selvey’s record is 502-333. This includes 7 sectionals and 3 regional titles. As a member of the Olympic Conference he won 5 conference crowns and was named conference coach of the year 3 times. The Patriots have also won one ACAC title.

    Coach Selvey has been very active in the IHSBCA serving as president, a regional representative, numerous committees, and as an assistant coach for the North team in the annual all-star series twice, in addition to being named Regional Coach of the Year. He has coached 14 all-stars and has had numerous players go on to compete at the collegiate level. While at Jay County, Lea has had 3 former players drafted by the MLB and two other players play some Independent ball and professionally overseas.

    He also has been involved in baseball in his community, helping to start the Jr High program at Jay County. Lea has been active with the Summit City Sluggers organization for 9 years. Lea and his wife Denise have three children (Josh, Kyle, and Kristen) and he currently teaches Science at Jay County High School.




    GARY ROGERS – FW LUERS / LEO (Active)

    Gary is a graduated of Merrillville HS and Huntington College. Coach Rogers spent 32 seasons as the head coach at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers HS and just completed his second season as the head man at Leo HS. His teams have won 513 games during that time period and his Luers’ teams won 4 sectional titles, 1 regional crown, 1 semi-state championship, and were state champions in 2008.

    Coach Rogers was the state coach of the year in 2008 and was twice the IHSBCA District Coach of the Year. He has served on numerous committees and is very active in the Fort Wayne baseball community. He has served as a volunteer assistant at Indiana Tech for many seasons; worked with Wildcat baseball league for 33 years; and serves on the board of the Northeast Indiana Baseball Association and a HOF member of that organization.




    MARK GROVE – CHURUBUSCO (Retired)

    Mark is a graduate of Bluffton High School and Ball State University. During his time at CHS, his teams won 513 games; 9 sectional titles; 4 regional crowns; and were semi-state runner-up in 1995. This included 9 NECC championships (4 tourney titles) and 2 ACAC crowns.

    Coach Grove has had 40 players go onto the play at the collegiate level and one player drafted. He has coached 25 All-State players; 6 North All-Stars; twice coached the North All-Star team and has been named the “District Coach of the Year” several times.

    Mark has been a long time IHSBCA member, served on numerous committees, and is currently helping out with the state clinic registration table. He has been a mentor to many coaches and is always a willing participant / organizer for clinics and youth baseball events.




    DOUG GREENLEE – KANKAKEE VALLEY (Retired)

    Doug graduated from South Putnam HS (‘77), Indiana State (BS 81), and Ball State (MA 85).  His teams won 503 games (62 % winning pct.) over a 28-year span including 25 years at Kankakee Valley HS winning 3 Sectionals, 2 Regionals, and 7 Conference Championships.  He was the 2013 North All Star Head Coach, served on numerous IHSBCA committees, and also served as Athletic Director for 16 years in four different schools. 

    Doug officiated basketball for over 25 years and worked four state finals.  He coached 9 North All Stars, had numerous players go on to play college baseball, and his teams at KV were ranked #1 in 3A on three occasions.




    TIM TERRY – SOUTH VERMILLION (Active)

    Tim is a 1973 graduate of Clinton HS (IN) where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He received his BS from Indiana State in 1978 and his MS from the same school in 1982. He began his head coaching journey in 1980 at Turkey Run HS for one season and has been the skipper at South Vermillion for the past 38 years. He is still active and has a career record of 605 wins and 357 losses.

    Coach Terry’s teams have recorded 9 Wabash River Conferences titles, 8 Sectional Championships, and 1 Regional crown. He has won 20+ games in 10 seasons, coached 6 Indiana All-Stars, been named IHSBCA District Coach of the Year twice, served as a North-South All- Star coach, and participated in numerous IHSBCA committees.

    Tim has also been involved in baseball outside the high school game in helping coach Little League, Pony League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion teams. He was the Girls basketball coach at South Vermillion for 34 years and won 2 conference titles, 5 sectionals, and recorded 295 wins.

    Tim is currently the athletic director at South Vermillion. He and his wife Kim (23 years, teaches Science at South Vermillion HS) have 4 boys: TJ (22), Canton (20), Cooper (18), and Easton (14).

    WALLACE JOHNSON

    Wallace is a 1975 graduate of Gary Roosevelt HS and a 1979 graduate of Indiana State University playing for legendary coach Bob Warn. He was co-captain of ISU’s first MVC championship team and their first appearance in NCAA post season play. Wallace led the nation in hitting (.502 in regular season) during that season and holds a .422 career average. He was elected to the ISU Hall of Fame in 1985.

    Wallace was drafted in the 6th round of the 1979 draft by the Montreal Expos. He was MVP of the Florida State League and a member of the 1981 (Denver) and 1986 (Indianapolis) AAA championship teams. He made his major league debut in 1981 with the Expos and was their all-time pinch hitter leader with 86 hits. His MLB totals were .255 BA, 5 HR, and 59 RBI in 428 games. Upon retiring as a player, he was the 3rd base coach for 5 seasons with the Chicago White Sox.



    CLINT BARMES

    Clint is a 1997 graduate of Vincennes Lincoln HS and played collegiately for Olney Central JC and then one season for Hall of Fame Coach Bob Warn at Indiana State before being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2000. While at ISU, Barmes was voted All-Region and All- Conference. He hit .375 with 93 hits, 18 doubles, 7 triples, and 10 home runs to go along with 63 runs scored, 37 RBI, and 20 stolen bases.

    His pro career began in 2000 with the Rockies where he played 3 seasons before reaching the major leagues. He played 8 seasons with the Rockies, one with the Houston Astros, 3 years with the Pirates, and one season (2015) with the Padres. He was a career .245 hitter with 89 HR and 415 RBI, 932 hits, 434 runs scored, and 43 stolen bases. He appeared in the post season twice, 2009 and 2013, and hit .286 in the 2013 NLDS.

    Clint and his wife Summer have two children, Cole and Whitney.




    JAMEY CARROLL

    Jamey is a 1992 graduate of Castle HS and was coached by Dave Sensenbrenner. His number was retired by Castle HS and he was a 1992 South All-Star. He played collegiately at the University of Evansville for Jim Brownlee. He graduated in 1996 and was an All-American that same year. His name appears 27 times in the U of E’s baseball record book.

    He is drafted in the 14th round by the Montreal Expos in the MLB Draft. Some career numbers are: 16.6 WAR, 1000 hits, 13 HR, .272 BA, 560 runs, 265 RBI, 74 SB, .349 OBP, and .687 OPS. His career spanned 12 years with the Montreal Expos / Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies, Cleveland Indians, LA Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, and Kansas City Royals.

    Some highlights from his MLB career are scoring the last run in Expos history; leading NL 2B in fielding percentage in 2006; and in 2007 he scored Matt Holliday with a sacrifice fly to win the NL Wild Card game.

    Jamey is currently working in the front office for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is his wife Kim have 11-year old twins: Cole and Mackenzie.

    JAMES ROBINSON - – KOKOMO, INDIANA

    James graduated from Harry E. Wood High School in Indianapolis and from Indiana University Kokomo. He played one year of baseball in high school.

    He started umpiring high school baseball in 1980 and his career lasted for thirty-five years. During his career, he worked thirty-three sectionals, 25 regionals, 14 semi-states, and six State Championships. He has umpired six IHSBCA North-South series and voted IHSBCA UOTY five times. In 1994, James was elected to the National Federation Baseball Rules Committee and served from 1995-1998. In 2002 was named IHSAA/NFOA Baseball Official of the Year and he was named as the National Federation Distinguished Official of the Year. James coached Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball for ten years.

    James has been a high school and college referee in football. Worked six years in Division II and seven years in the Mid-American Conference. He became a replay official for the MAC and moved to the Big Ten. He was a replay official in the National Championship game in 2014 at the Rose Bowl between Florida State and Auburn.

    James and his wife, Nada, deceased, has one daughter, Chiquita and one grandson, Kameron.



    RAY MILLER – PORTLAND, IN

    Ray Miller took over the Portland Rockets franchise in 1972. He won over 900 games in his 30 plus year tenure as the manager. In 1991 he became the AABC state secretary and moved the state tournament to Portland. He coached the Rockets to state titles in 1985, 1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2004, and 2006.

    Ray has been a great ambassador for baseball and has had over 30 former players go into coaching at the high school or college ranks. In October 2000, the Rockets named their home field Ray Miller Field and in 2002 he was the first inductee into the Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.




    BRIAN ABBOTT – Eastbrook / HU / IWU / HNHS / IHSBCA

    Coach Abbott spent 21 years as a high school coach at Eastbrook HS and Huntington North HS. He amassed over 300 wins, 7 county championships, 4 conference titles, 3 sectional crowns, 1 regional title, and a final four appearance in 1999.

    Brian served as an IHSBCA district rep for many years and was named IHSBCA Executive Director in 2012, a role in which he currently serves. During this time the IHSBCA has experienced significant growth in all aspects of the state clinic and in the membership. In addition to assisting financially with the expansion of the Hall of Fame.

    During the high school coaching years, Coach Abbott also served as a pitching coach at Huntington College / University from 1997 – 2007 and again from 2013 - present. He was a part of teams that appeared in 5 straight NAIA regionals and recently (2017, 2019) the HU team has been in two national tournament regionals. In between stints at HC / HU, Brian served as the pitching coach for Indiana Wesleyan University for 5 years where 2 of his pitchers signed professional contracts. He has spent more than 20 years in the college game as an assistant coach. Regardless of the school, Coach Abbott’s staffs are very well respected and have appeared several times in the national level ERA rankings.

    Brian played 4 years of varsity baseball at Delphi HS and pitched collegiately at Huntington College where he obtained a BS in Mathematics Education. He also has a Master’s Degree in Mathematics, a Masters in School Administration from Ball State, and is currently in his 37th year in education, teaching Math at Riverview MS in Huntington. He and his wife Trisha have two children: Tyler (wife Chelsie and son Quinn) and Briley.
